Finance Help

Life is not always predicable and when a loved one dies, sometimes this can be very unexpected. Large sums of money are not always available when needed to pay for a funeral. Below are some suggestions you can follow to gain extra financial support if you require it.

The deceased’s bank account, as soon as your loved one’s bank becomes aware of their passing their bank accounts will be frozen - if the accounts were in the sole name of the deceased. However,  if you are needing funds to pay for funeral expenses most banks will release funds only for this purpose, and we will supply you with an invoice and then the bank will normally pay the funeral account.

If your person was receiving Centrelink Benefits or a pension from the Department of Veterans Affairs, typically you will receive a one off bereavement payment.

Insurance Policies

It’s surprising how many policies are not claimed because families are unaware of them. Ensure you look amongst your loved ones documents for funeral insurance, funeral plans and superannuation details. In some cases superannuation companies will release funds early for payment of a funeral.

AFRM Claims Advocacy can help you deal with the trustee and life insurer on your behalf, allowing you to be with your family during a time of need. Most superannuation funds have automatic life insurance that may be available (to the family) upon the death of a loved one.

It all starts with AFRM checking whether your loved one had life insurance in their superannuation fund - it is a free availability check.

A life insurance claim with a valid nomination to a super dependant is separate to the “estate” and therefore does not need a solicitor to manage. Instead, using AFRM Claims Advocacy, can often make it quicker for the funds to be received and often more affordable than solicitor percentage fees or hourly rates.
